Hi folks,

I've just got myself a new HD mini satbox from UK to play with (it's called an Eaglebox HD Mini) and it came with all the European Ku sats pre-programmed but no C-band and nothing for Asia-Pacific, so I've been busy pushing the buttons on its remote to add three of our local sats and transponders.

This has worked and I can now watch what I've added, but all the manual button-pushing is a slow process and there are about another 10 sats and all their transponders that I'd still like to add. I got to thinking that it would be a whole lot easier if I could compile a new database file on my computer where I've got a QWERTY.

This new box has both an RS232 inrterface and a USB socket, and using the USB, I've been able to download it's database file to an external drive, and I've been looking at this file on my computer to see if using it as a template, I can add more sats and transponders.

It's a binary file containing some recognisable ASCII characters and some none-ASCII, so I can't handle it with an ordinary text editor. See my small snipped example of the format "snip-db.bin" in my attached "database.zip"

So here's my question: Can anyone recommend a linux-based editor that will allow me to view and edit this kind of file nicely?

Lots of satboxes have RS232 interfaces, but I've never been able to get to grips with extracting or editting their database files externally. Anyone know if there 's a common standard format for these files, or are they all proprietary and different?

I believe it's possible to download pre-programmed datafiles on-line and load them into certain satboxes, but I don't know if there's a common standard for all this, or if it's all proprietary. Anyway I'm hoping I might be able to bypass this part and compile my own datafiles.

Anyone here got experience or advice to offer on this?

It was one of the strongest in the sky but each time they add channels on it seems to get weaker. i was once able to get it on a 1.2 meter dish. Those days are gone but am wondering if the signal will pick up with vinasat 2 taking the ku load.
My Azbox Me...

I posted this on Austech but figured not everyone goes there.

Is it a Dreambox? You may be mistaken if you only saw the menu's on the TV! Now running an open source linux platform, many teams are now producing Enigma 2 images for the Azbox Me as well as the older Azbox models.

My Azbox Me arrived earlier in the week and it’s the latest 1080P high definition satellite receiver addition to the Azbox stable. I've had a little bit of a play and my first impressions are positive. Upon opening the box I saw that it's a similar size to my Azbox Ultra.

My main reason for purchasing an Azbox is because of its unique ability to display 4:2:2 feeds. I've been very happy with my Azbox Ultra's ability to display HD pictures, 4:2:2 feeds and it's blindscanning (though slow, it's accurate). We don't get too many 4:2:2 feeds on this side of the world but I've often found them and you just take it for granted when you have a receiver like the Azbox, it just displays them!

The front panel has a power button (back lit and coloured depending if on or in standby), VFD (vacuum florescent display), and USB port.

On the right hand side there is a single card slot. Which you can configure this with CCcam, OScam etc.

The rear dons HDMI, composite and component connections, optical out, e-SATA, 2nd USB port and a LNB loop through. There is also a 12V power input with on/off switch and a switch to put the receiver into recovery mode in case of a firmware corruption or bad firmware image upload.

Under the lid there is space for a either a 2.5" or 3.5" SATA Hard disk. Interestingly there is a flash key which I'm not sure if it's just for the firmware or also the boot loader.

You can also use either an e-SATA or USB hard drive externally with the receiver.

It has 3 boot partitions and this is set up by the factory so you can have 3 different images/firmwares loaded. The first partition, 0, has the factory Aztrino/Neutrino Enigma 2 firmware loaded by default. But unless you're only looking at using the receiver for FTA reception you will probably go for one of the 3rd party Enigma 2 images such as RTi, Open RSi (based on Open PLi) or Spaze Millenium which is based on RTi. You can read a bit more about these images and how to load the different partitions here http://www.austech.info/decoders/723...g-started.html

It's very easy to load the firmware images. It's a matter of turning on the box and when the 'VFD Ready' appears on the display press the Volume + button on the remote and the box will display its IP address. Put this into your web browser and it's a simple case of selecting the partition you want to flash and following the prompts.

I've had a quick look at all 4 images that are in the link that I posted above. I liked RSi best but I couldn't get the CrossEPG 7 day epg working but I managed to get it going on the Spaze image.
A lot of the Enigma 2 image teams don't seem to be running download servers as much now for plugin/emu's etc. I downloaded a copy of TSPanel 4.8 and through this it was fairly painless to load CCcam and it's config and then FTP to the receiver (using root and azbox for the password) to edit the cccam.cfg. Anyone familiar with a Dreambox and using Dreambox Control Center will have no problem in using this receiver.
Being Enigma 2 based there are many plugins and applications that will work on both the Dreambox/Vu+ Duo/Azbox Me.

RSi and Spaze had blindscan (and the latest Aztrino should) and it seemed to work ok but it did miss a few channels. I’m confident that this will be resolved because many FTA (free to air) feed hunters a relying on this to be used with its 4:2:2 abilities.
The manual scans I did for Austar/Foxtel and Aurora with Network enabled picked up all the channels. (it's the only dish I have set up since I've moved house)

The receiver comes with an external 12 power supply and because it came from Europe, a Euro 2 pin figure 8 power lead but most people have an Aussie one kicking around. There is a lead for the internal hard drive, batteries for the remote and a quick start guide. There is no manual because of the different 3rd party Enigma 2 images available.
